A video of Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir that showed him taunting detained Gaza flotilla activists has drawn criticism from foreign leaders as well as members of his own government.<\/p>\n

In the video, released Wednesday on social media, Mr. Ben-Gvir can be seen forcing a protester\u2019s head to the floor of a boat after she yelled, \u201cFree, free Palestine.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a statement released after the video, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel has \u201cevery right\u201d to prevent \u201cprovocative\u201d flotillas of Hamas supporters from entering the country\u2019s territorial waters and reaching the Gaza Strip.<\/p>\n

\u201cHowever, the way that Minister Ben-Gvir dealt with the flotilla activists is not in line with Israel\u2019s values and norms,\u201d Mr. Netanuyu said in a rare rebuke of one of his own Cabinet officers.<\/p>\n

The activists were being held at the port of Ashdod after Israeli forces intercepted their flotilla on Tuesday. Dozens were forced to their knees with their hands bound behind them. The video showed Mr. Ben-Gvir, who is in charge of the country\u2019s police forces, waving an Israeli flag and shouting at them.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnyone who comes to our territory to support terrorism and identify with Hamas will get slapped, and we won\u2019t turn the other cheek,\u201d Mr. Ben-Gvir said Wednesday on X.<\/p>\n

The flotilla protestors included several European citizens. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called their treatment by Israeli security officers \u201cunacceptable\u201d and called it a violation of human dignity.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Italian government is immediately taking, at the highest institutional levels, all necessary steps to secure the immediate release of the Italian citizens involved,\u201d Ms. Meloni said on X. \u201cItaly further demands an apology for the treatment reserved to these demonstrators and for the total contempt shown toward the explicit requests of the Italian government.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jean-Noel Barrot, the French foreign minister, said he summoned Israel\u2019s ambassador to France to express his country\u2019s indignation and to obtain an explanation for the events on the video.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe safety of our compatriots is a constant priority,\u201d Mr. Barrot said. \u201cWhatever one thinks of the flotilla \u2014 and we have indicated on several occasions our disapproval of this initiative \u2014 our compatriots who are participating in it must be treated with respect and released as soon as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa\u2019ar accused his fellow Cabinet member of damaging the country\u2019s image with his \u201cdisgraceful performance.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou squandered enormous professional and successful efforts made by many, many people \u2014 from [Israel Defense Forces] soldiers to Ministry of Foreign Affairs employees and many other fine individuals,\u201d Mr. Sa\u2019ar said on X. \u201cNo, you are not the face of Israel.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr. Ben-Gvir was undeterred by the public criticism from Israel\u2019s top diplomat.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are those in the government who still haven\u2019t figured out how to behave toward supporters of terrorism,\u201d he said. \u201cIsrael\u2019s foreign minister is expected to understand that Israel has stopped being a pushover.\u201d<\/p>\n
