President Trump on Wednesday said he\u2019s eagerly waiting to see if Iran provides \u201c100% good answers\u201d to a U.S. peace proposal or if he needs to restart crippling military strikes in the coming days.<\/p>\n

The president said U.S. forces are \u201call ready to go\u201d if Iran does not meet his demands.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s right on the borderline, believe me,\u201d Mr. Trump said. \u201cWe\u2019d have to [get] a complete 100% good answers. And if we do, we save a lot of time, energy, and lives.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tehran responded in kind, promising to expand the war if Washington resumes airstrikes.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf aggression against Iran is repeated, the promised regional war will this time be taken beyond the region,\u201d the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said in a statement.<\/p>\n

The dueling rhetoric signaled that the conflict was entering a critical stage.<\/p>\n

Pakistani negotiators are working feverishly to reach a lasting peace in the war that\u2019s caused global economic upheaval and jarred U.S. allies in the Gulf region.<\/p>\n

They are effectively facing a weekend deadline to get signatures on paper. Otherwise, violence could flare again.<\/p>\n

Mr. Trump said some people in Iran are working with the U.S. constructively, with the situation in its \u201cfinal stages.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll either have a deal, or we\u2019re going to do some things that are a little bit nasty, but hopefully that won\u2019t happen,\u201d Mr. Trump said.<\/p>\n

Negotiators have teased progress before, only to see talks fall short of Mr. Trump\u2019s goal of preventing Tehran from gaining a nuclear weapon. Still, both sides face pressure to wind down fighting due to economic pain back home.<\/p>\n

The U.S. average price for a gallon of gas stood at $4.56, up 53% from when the war started, according to the AAA motor club.<\/p>\n

The average price in all 50 states is over $4 per gallon.<\/p>\n

Mr. Trump said he would not be rushed into a bad deal with Iran simply because it\u2019s an election year. He underscored that other foreign wars lasted much longer than the Iran conflict, which started three months ago.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m in no hurry. You know, everyone is saying, \u2019Oh, the midterms.\u2019 I\u2019m in no hurry,\u201d the president said.<\/p>\n

But days earlier, he told the Iranians the \u201cclock is ticking,\u201d and they need to make a deal that prevents the Islamic republic from getting a nuclear weapon.<\/p>\n

Mr. Trump said he would resume military strikes, perhaps by the weekend, if he doesn\u2019t see a breakthrough.<\/p>\n

\u201cIdeally, I\u2019d like to see few people killed as opposed to a lot,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, writing on social media, said his country \u201chonored its commitments and explored every avenue to avert war; all paths remain open from our side.<\/p>\n

\u201cForcing Iran to surrender through coercion is nothing but an illusion. Mutual respect in diplomacy is far wiser, safer, and more sustainable than war.\u201d<\/p>\n

The IRGC used more aggressive rhetoric. It said it could exact revenge on places beyond the Middle East and surprise Israel and the U.S.<\/p>\n

Its comments echoed those of Iran\u2019s Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi, who said Wednesday that \u201cmany more surprises\u201d await Iran\u2019s enemies if they attack again.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur powerful Armed Forces are confirmed as 1st to strike down a touted F-35,\u201d Mr. Aragchi wrote on X. \u201cWith lessons learned and knowledge we gained, return to war will feature many more surprises.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s unclear where Iran would plan to strike outside of the Mideast if open war with the U.S. and Israel restarted.<\/p>\n

In addition to striking at dozens of U.S. military installations across the Middle East, Iranian missiles flew 2,000 miles to strike at the U.K.-U.S. Diego Garcia military base in the Indian Ocean.<\/p>\n

NATO air defenses also intercepted several missiles targeting Turkish territory.<\/p>\n

Iran\u2019s proxy groups in Lebanon, Yemen and Iraq could also launch new offensives if the U.S. and Israel decide to restart strikes. The United Arab Emirates on Wednesday blamed Iran-backed Iraqi militia groups for launching six drones at the country this week, with one striking near the Barakah nuclear power plant.<\/p>\n

The U.S. and Israel started the war on Feb. 28 with airstrikes that killed Iran\u2019s top leaders and decimated its military infrastructure. Iran retaliated by clamping down on maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital oil chokepoint.<\/p>\n

The U.S. and Iran entered a ceasefire in early April, though there have been skirmishes in the Strait of Hormuz, and the United Arab Emirates accused Iran of striking its assets.<\/p>\n

Sen. Lindsey Graham, a South Carolina Republican and national security hawk, said any deal must be comprehensive and prevent Tehran from acting as a top sponsor of terror.<\/p>\n

He repeated his skepticism of Pakistani mediators who are trying to broker the deal.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m hearing that Pakistan\u2019s Field Marshal may travel to Iran \u2013 what could go wrong?! Maybe he\u2019ll report the status of Iranian military aircraft being housed on Pakistani air bases?\u201d the senator wrote on X. \u201cLike so many, I\u2019m watching very closely what unfolds regarding, yet again, another effort to reach a deal with the Iranian regime. I wish all involved success that is real.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr. Trump is seeking leverage in talks by squeezing Iran, economically, with a crippling blockade of its ports. He said popular pressure is mounting against the regime as Iranians suffer from high prices and mass layoffs.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of foment that we haven\u2019t seen before so much, and we\u2019ll see what happens,\u201d Mr. Trump said.<\/p>\n

U.S. Marines boarded an Iranian-flagged tanker ship traveling in the Gulf of Oman, Central Command said Wednesday, after the vessel tried to break through the Pentagon\u2019s blockade of Iranian ports.<\/p>\n

CENTCOM, which oversees U.S. military operations in the Middle East, said in a social media post that American forces searched the ship and ordered the crew to alter course. The post did not clarify what the ship was carrying.<\/p>\n

\u201cU.S. forces continue to fully enforce the blockade, and have now redirected 91 commercial ships to ensure compliance,\u201d CENTCOM added.<\/p>\n

Iranian authorities have not commented on the seizure. In the past, Iran has asserted that U.S. seizures and attacks of commercial vessels amount to war crimes and piracy.<\/p>\n

Markets on Wednesday seemed hopeful of a breakthrough in the conflict. Brent crude oil, an international benchmark, fell nearly 6% to about $105 per barrel, and U.S. stocks rallied.<\/p>\n

Yet an increasing number of U.S. lawmakers are losing patience with Mr. Trump\u2019s war.<\/p>\n

Senate Democrats and four Republicans voted Tuesday to advance a resolution to end the war.<\/p>\n

The 50-47 procedural vote discharges a Democrat-led war powers resolution to terminate the hostilities, absent approval from the full Congress. This lets the measure skip committee consideration and get an up-or-down vote on the floor.<\/p>\n

Mr. Trump says Congress should not interfere with his effort to keep Tehran from gaining a nuclear weapon and that his war aims will be worth the economic pressure that some Americans feel from the war.<\/p>\n

\u201cCan you believe this guy? Donald Trump thinks the hundreds of extra dollars Americans are shelling out at the gas station each month are peanuts, a pittance,\u201d Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer, New York Democrat, said. \u201cWhat does he know? Does he ever fill up his own tank with gas? No.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr. Trump said the conflict can end if Iran comes to the table and agrees to his terms.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe only question is, do we go and finish it up, or are [the Iranians] going to be signing a document?\u201d Mr. Trump said in a commencement address to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in Connecticut. \u201cLet\u2019s see what happens.\u201d<\/p>\n
