ABOARD AIR FORCE ONE \u2014 President Trump says he\u2019s conducting five interviews before he selects someone to permanently fill the director of national intelligence job in the wake of Tulsi Gabbard\u2019s resignation.<\/p>\n

Mr. Trump also said he would like his acting DNI, William J. Pulte, to trim staff.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll have a very good person watching things, Bill Pulte,\u201d Mr. Trump said Friday en route to Wisconsin. \u201cIf he cut, I wouldn\u2019t mind that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr. Pulte is the director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency. His background is in investment and real estate, making him an unusual choice for the intelligence job.<\/p>\n

Some lawmakers, including Republicans, say Mr. Pulte is not the right fit for a job overseeing national secrets, so he would have a hard time getting Senate-confirmed for the permanent role.<\/p>\n

But the president said Mr. Pulte is qualified to serve in the acting role after reforming the housing finance agency.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019ll do a very good job. He\u2019ll watch [the agency], mostly,\u201d Mr. Trump said. \u201cDid a great job at Freddie Mae and Freddie Mac.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr. Trump will be selecting the permanent DNI after Ms. Gabbard cited her husband\u2019s battle with cancer for stepping down.<\/p>\n

Mr. Trump on Friday also criticized Sen. Thom Tillis, North Carolina Republican, for saying he would oppose acting Attorney General Todd Blanche\u2019s nomination to the permanent position unless Mr. Blanche condemns the Capitol attackers of Jan. 6, 2021.<\/p>\n

\u201cSenator Tillis is a loser; that\u2019s why he didn\u2019t run,\u201d Mr. Trump said, referring to Mr. Tillis\u2019 decision not to seek reelection. \u201cNow he\u2019s trying to make trouble by opposing anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n
