Pulte in exchange for their support for reauthorizing a key federal surveillance law.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/homebuyerrelocation.com\/?p=1683\">Battle over Section 702 symbolic of authoritarians versus constitutionalists<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Mr. Trump accused Senate Democrats of allowing the chief surveillance statute, known as FISA, to lapse in an attempt to force him to withdraw Mr. Pulte from the post.<\/p>\n<p>The president, flanked in the Oval Office by members of Republican leadership from both chambers, said he told the GOP lawmakers, \u201cWe can\u2019t let them extort us.\u201d He said that Democrats \u201chave done it on numerous occasions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Trump said Democrats are \u201closing tremendous support because they\u2019re extorting on law and order. And they can\u2019t win on law and order.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The foreign surveillance law could expire Friday as Democrats block a bipartisan bill to reauthorize the key spy authority, over their concerns about Mr. Trump\u2019s pick to temporarily lead the U.S. intelligence community. Mark R. Warner of Virginia, the top Democrat on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>The law requires the director of national intelligence to have \u201cextensive\u201d national security experience, but Mr. Pulte does not. His background is in investment and real estate.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Trump defended Mr. Pulte Wednesday as \u201csmart\u201d and capable of quickly adapting to the role, which he has insisted will be temporary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSmart people are smart people. I always say I\u2019d rather have smart than experience, but experience is good, too,\u201d the president said. \u201cI would say he\u2019s going to be there for a short while, while we pick somebody else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added, \u201cWe\u2019re interviewing five different people.
