On Sunday, as President Trump marks his 80th year on Earth, he\u2019ll set a new bar for presidential parties with professional MMA fights on the White House\u2019s South Lawn.<\/p>\n

The seven-fight card is unprecedented for the White House and UFC, the world\u2019s most recognizable mixed martial arts circuit. The president\u2019s residence has never hosted an athletic exhibition of this magnitude. The fighters haven\u2019t had a venue this unique, either.<\/p>\n

Approximately 4,000 spectators will watch the fights in person. It\u2019s a relatively minuscule turnout for fighters used to selling out some of the biggest arenas in the world.<\/p>\n

Most of the athletes said they hadn\u2019t fought outside in years, with Sunday\u2019s crowd being their smallest since the COVID-19 pandemic limited attendance in 2020.<\/p>\n

\u201cPersonally, it\u2019s not a big difference for me,\u201d heavyweight contender Ciryl Gane said.<\/p>\n

The exhibition, titled Freedom 250 for this year\u2019s American Semiquincentennial, has drawn unparalleled media scrutiny.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s definitely precedence for athletic events, but this is a combination of athletic event and a celebrity event,\u201d said Tevi Troy, a presidential historian and senior fellow at the Reagan Institute.<\/p>\n

Many UFC staples \u2014 including commentator Joe Rogan, former women\u2019s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey and current middleweight belt holder Sean Strickland \u2014 have publicly criticized the joint venture between the MMA brand and the Trump administration.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t like the idea of fighting outside at all,\u201d Mr. Rogan said on his popular podcast, \u201cThe Joe Rogan Experience.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rousey, on the other hand, criticized the lackluster lineup while the outspoken Strickland continued criticizing Mr. Trump.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not even salty they didn\u2019t clear me,\u201d Strickland said in a video posted to social media. \u201cCould you picture me sitting with [FBI Director] Kash Patel? \u2026 I\u2019d ban me from the White House too.\u201d<\/p>\n

No criticism was enough to derail the vision of Mr. Trump, a longtime Ultimate Fighting Championship fan.<\/p>\n

Frowning Fathers<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sports at the White House isn\u2019t unheard of.<\/p>\n

President Theodore Roosevelt boxed in the basement.<\/p>\n

President Barack Obama installed basketball hoops on what was once a tennis court.<\/p>\n

President George W. Bush invited local T-ball squads to play their Little League games on the South Lawn.<\/p>\n

None of those match the magnitude of Sunday\u2019s UFC card. These are professionals, and this isn\u2019t an exhibition. The lightweight and interim heavyweight titles are on the line.<\/p>\n

\u201cTrump, I think, is more willing than other presidents to be asked that question: \u2019Why aren\u2019t you doing it the way the previous presidents did?\u2019\u201d Troy said. \u201cBreaking the precedent doesn\u2019t bother him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Many historically minded spectators, like former White House Historical Association Chief Edward Lengel, have aired concerns about the event.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not one of those who\u2019s going to be outraged about the sport itself being somehow lesser,\u201d said Mr. Lengel, whose father was a boxer and whose grandfather was a pro wrestling referee. \u201cHowever, this is unprecedented in terms of this type of event being presided over by the president at a dignified location.\u201d<\/p>\n

UFC CEO Dana White poured $60 million into the weekend\u2019s event. Turning the lawn of an 18th-century mansion into a 21st-century venue for combat sports is a vast undertaking.<\/p>\n

The South Lawn needed risers and thousands of black, folding chairs for spectators. Paramount+, the streaming service broadcasting the matches, needed wires and access for its crews and cavalcade of cameras.<\/p>\n

Seven federal agencies have worked together to screen the hundreds of laborers who brought in more than a dozen trucks full of construction material.<\/p>\n

Work on the venue began in April, with laborers feverishly continuing their preparations as recently as Thursday. When hundreds of members descended on the site for a walkthrough, the air was abuzz with the whirring of drills and saws.<\/p>\n

But the biggest piece of construction is already in place: The Claw. The makeshift, 90-foot roof features four legs, an array of lights, speakers and open siding \u2014 just enough coverage to keep the elements off the octagon, which sits in a cage between the White House and the Washington Monument.<\/p>\n

Spectators farther from the fighters could still get wet in uncovered seats. Mr. White has said the fights will continue regardless of the weather conditions.<\/p>\n

The newly built venue features 4,000 foldout chairs for the lucky few who scored an invite to Sunday\u2019s fights. The best seats will be mere feet from the athletes. Those with less ideal seats get views of the Washington Monument as a consolation prize, with four large screens to help ensure they don\u2019t miss a single punch, kick or chokehold.<\/p>\n

Mr. Trump has openly expressed his pride in the site, noting that it could stick around despite its temporary status. Published plans from federal officials noted that the teardown process will begin at 10 a.m. Monday \u2014 less than 10 hours after the event concludes.<\/p>\n

But a lawsuit from the Public Integrity Project this week sought to accelerate that deconstruction, calling the event corrupt and claiming The Claw required congressional approval.<\/p>\n

Trump administration officials have shrugged off the lawsuit, with Justice Department senior media affairs manager Natalie Balassarre telling ESPN that the plaintiffs \u201chate fun.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were expecting a lawsuit,\u201d Mr. White said. \u201cWe expected everything coming into this event. We thought it would be sooner. We knew it was going to come. We didn\u2019t know who or how, but we knew it was going to come.\u201d<\/p>\n

The lawsuit has not succeeded in pausing construction, even as historians weigh the current events with the Founding Fathers\u2019 intentions for the White House. President John Adams, the first commander in chief to take residence in the executive mansion, couldn\u2019t have predicted professional cage fights with clear advertisements for Bud Light, Crypto.com and Polymarket.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think this is inconsistent with what the Founders would have intended or wanted. They always wanted a certain level of gravitas and verity and formalness at the White House,\u201d Mr. Lengel said, noting that he found the unprecedented event inappropriate, but not scandalous.<\/p>\n

The only comparison point he considered for a similarly rowdy White House event occurred when President Andrew Jackson fell out of a window during a party.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven he didn\u2019t do anything like this,\u201d Mr. Lengel said.<\/p>\n

Ready to rumble<\/strong><\/p>\n

Customs change, even at the White House. Mr. Lengel noted that past presidents organized displays, concerts and demonstrations to suit their needs. Mr. Kennedy kicked off the trend, despite having little understanding of classical music.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe didn\u2019t even really like it. But what he was trying to do was trying to create this image, bringing real, high-class culture to the White House,\u201d Mr. Lengel said, adding that President Bill Clinton brought bluegrass musicians to emphasize his Southern roots to the masses.<\/p>\n

Mr. Trump is no exception.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re trying to move away from highbrow, elitist entertainment. [The UFC event] is much more consistent with their populist view and how they\u2019re trying to run the White House,\u201d Mr. Lengel explained. \u201cIt\u2019s also consistent with what Secretary [Pete] Hegseth is doing with the Department of War: trying to incubate a warrior ethos and mentality.\u201d<\/p>\n

About 25% of the invitees for Sunday\u2019s event are expected to be active-duty members of the military. The move has only further worried skeptics like Mr. Rogan.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt sounds crazy. I know it\u2019s going to be very high security \u2014 and high stress and weird \u2014 to have a fight at the White House in the middle of a war,\u201d he said on his podcast.<\/p>\n

Most of the participating fighters \u2014 eight Americans, three Brazilians, a Canadian, a Frenchman and the Georgian-Spanish lightweight champion Ilia Topuria \u2014 have openly underplayed the event.<\/p>\n

Their media appearances have described the White House card as an honor, but most of the athletes are trying to maintain their typical routines, despite an intensifying media circus.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just another fight,\u201d said Gane.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt hasn\u2019t quite felt different. Just feels like another fight week,\u201d said bantamweight Sean O\u2019Malley. \u201cYou\u2019re in such a different mindset and different world when you\u2019re in the octagon. \u2026 But I think it\u2019s going to be a beautiful day and it\u2019s going to turn out perfect.\u201d<\/p>\n

A few thousand fans will watch Gane, O\u2019Malley and a dozen other athletes fight with their own eyes. About 80,000 more are expected to gather a quarter of a mile to the south for massive viewing parties at the Ellipse.<\/p>\n

The weekend will be littered with free-to-attend events, starting with press conferences on Friday night at the Lincoln Memorial and continuing with ceremonial weigh-ins and a festival at the Ellipse.<\/p>\n
