D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser issued an executive order Friday reestablishing the citywide juvenile curfew and letting the Metropolitan Police Department declare curfew zones.<\/p>\n

The curfew for anyone under age 18 went into effect at 11 p.m. Friday and lasted until 6 a.m. Saturday.<\/p>\n

The order will remain in effect each night through June 27, according to Ms. Bowser\u2019s social media post.<\/p>\n

The mayor\u2019s previous order establishing curfews ran from May 22 through June 6. She has been using the limited-time executive orders to bridge the gap between the expiration of the Juvenile Curfew Emergency Amendment Act of 2025 on April 15 and new legislation passed by the D.C. Council for curfews starting July 16.<\/p>\n

In her latest order, Ms. Bowser excoriated the D.C. Council for failing to extend the emergency act from 2025, arguing that it encouraged federal involvement in city affairs.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Council\u2019s inaction on extending the Juvenile Curfew Second Temporary Amendment Act of 2025, coupled with high-visibility unruly and violent acts by youth, has energized federal law enforcement and prosecutors. It is preferable to forestall the large gatherings in the first place and to rely on locally grounded remedies, rather than have the federal government step in visibly and forcefully,\u201d Ms. Bowser said in her executive order.<\/p>\n

U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro previously said she wants to fine the parents of children who violate the city\u2019s general curfew or curfew zones.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Ms. Pirro lamented Friday on X that she can\u2019t charge three recently arrested suspects in the fight among youths at a Navy Yard Chipotle \u201cbecause the DC Council won\u2019t lower the age of accountability.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ms. Bowser also brought up the restaurant\u2019s fray, writing that \u201cfootage of unruly groups of youth, such as the individuals dressed in black wearing masks while fighting and hurling chairs at Chipotle, harm the District\u2019s reputation \u2026 and deter some visitors and residents from coming out and enjoying all the District has to offer.\u201d<\/p>\n

After being empowered by Ms. Bowser\u2019s order, the Metropolitan Police Department issued its juvenile curfew zone Friday for Navy Yard.\u00a0<\/p>\n
