U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz said he\u2019s confident that a peace deal with Iran will be signed on Sunday.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m confident, the team is confident,\u201d Mr. Waltz said Sunday on ABC\u2019s \u201cThis Week.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAgain, I\u2019ll let the final details be announced by them. I don\u2019t want to get ahead of the president or the vice president, but they have every intent of getting this done today.\u201d<\/p>\n

President Trump said the U.S. and Iran could reach a deal to end the roughly five-month conflict on Sunday. The deal would reopen the Strait of Hormuz and give both sides 60 days to discuss the future of Iran\u2019s nuclear program.<\/p>\n

Mr. Waltz said the details in the memorandum of understanding, which outlines these conditions for a deal, will be \u201cworked out as we go forward into the next round of negotiations.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added that the frozen Iranian assets set to return to Iran under the peace deal \u201cwill not be upfront cash, so to speak, that we saw in the Obama deal,\u201d he said, referring to President Obama\u2019s 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, a deal that sought to end Iran\u2019s nuclear program. Mr. Trump withdrew from the deal in 2018.<\/p>\n

Mr. Waltz said there were \u201cmassive loopholes\u201d in the Obama deal that will now be closed, adding that \u201cno one on this team is just going to take the Iranians at their word.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is all about verification and there are huge gaps in the JCPOA and the Obama nuclear deal in terms of actually verifying what we know,\u201d Mr. Waltz said. \u201cWe know the Iranians have tended to cheat on in the past, there were not \u2018any-time, anywhere\u2019 inspections of their facilities. The Iranians could delay things; they could choose which list of inspectors they accepted or not.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr. Waltz said Iran\u2019s leaders are \u201cincredibly difficult negotiators,\u201d adding that they are \u201chaving a very hard time getting guidance from their supreme leader.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I just can\u2019t over-emphasize our Gulf allies \u2013\u2013 the Kuwaitis, the Bahrainis, the Qataris, especially the [United Arab Emirates] \u2013\u2013 are standing shoulder-to-shoulder with us,\u201d he said. \u201cThe Iranians have shown their true colors and I think they\u2019ve made a massive strategic mistake by attacking its allies and its neighbors the way it has.\u201d<\/p>\n

Iran\u2019s state media has said it\u2019s unlikely that a deal could be reached Sunday, but it could be coming in the next few days.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe must wait for the exact timing of the agreement\u2019s signing. It will NOT happen tomorrow, but it could take place in the coming days,\u201d Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei told Iranian state media on Saturday. \u201cDue to the other side\u2019s inconsistency, we must remain cautious in commenting on the process.\u201d<\/p>\n
