U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz acknowledged Sunday that Iranian officials aren\u2019t \u201cgood guys,\u201d but negotiations must take place because the Trump administration is \u201claser focused\u201d on trying to reach a nuclear deal.<\/p>\n

\u201cNone of these senior members of this genocidal regime are good guys by any means. They certainly wouldn\u2019t pass an FBI background check. No one expects that, but at the end of the day the administration \u2026 is taking a pragmatic approach,\u201d he said on CBS News\u2019 \u201cFace the Nation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr. Waltz said the Trump administration knows \u201cthe type of people that we\u2019re dealing with,\u201d citing the regime\u2019s deadly crackdown on protesters and its incarceration of Americans. But he emphasized that any agreement would not be reliant on trusting Iran, but rather \u201call about verification\u201d and would carry threats of military force.<\/p>\n

Mr. Waltz\u2019s comments come as Vice President J.D. Vance began talks with Iran\u2019s parliamentary speaker, Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, and Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi at a Swiss mountainside resort near Lake Lucerne. Mediators from Pakistan and Qatar were also in the room, helping with negotiations.<\/p>\n
