Dan Goldman for his pro-Israel stance.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/homebuyerrelocation.com\/?p=2628\">Tucker Carlson quits the GOP: \u2018I\u2019m out\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The department said on Monday it opened the probe into Brooklyn\u2019s Poetica Coffee, which wrote online \u200cthat it would have refused service to the New York Democrat had it recognized him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Civil Rights Division has opened an investigation and will bring an enforcement action if warranted,\u201d Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon said on social media. \u201cFederal law prohibits public accommodations such as coffee shops from discriminating \u2060against patrons based on their race, religion, or national origin. These actions are not only reprehensible, they\u2019re potentially illegal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Goldman reportedly went into the cafe outside his district so that his 7-year-old daughter could use the restroom on Sunday, and he bought a coffee as a thank-you to the helpful staff.<\/p>\n<p>Poetica Coffee posted a since-deleted Instagram message Sunday that it issued a refund to the lawmaker after realizing who he was, saying, \u201cWe see that you stopped by our shop today for a coffee. We don\u2019t serve racists, fascists, homophobes, genocide enablers, or anyone \u2060in between. Too bad we didn\u2019t recognize you right away, or we would have turned you away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnjoy your loss on Tuesday. Don\u2019t ever come to Poetica,\u201d the shop wrote.<\/p>\n<p>The Instagram account has seemingly been \u2060deactivated since.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Goldman said Monday that the \u201csurprising\u201d ordeal reflects a \u201csad state of affairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had such a nice interaction with the barista in the coffee shop,\u201d he told CNN\u2019s Laura Coates. \u201cShe was wearing a hijab, I didn\u2019t know her, but she couldn\u2019t have been nicer and allowed my daughter to go use the bathroom, and I honestly was so grateful for her kindness that I felt like I should buy a coffee, and so I did, and I gave her a large tip.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added, \u201cTwo people, obviously from different backgrounds, different faiths, but that\u2019s what America is, and that\u2019s what New York City is. That is what I believe in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said he would prefer the Justice Department probe antisemitism against others, not him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, I would rather they spend their time and resources investigating antisemitism against people who do not have a platform that I do, who are not elected officials, who do not \u2014 in some ways \u2014 ask for this,\u201d he said. \u201cI mean, I don\u2019t ask for the antisemitism, but I\u2019m a public figure, and I can accept the criticism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Goldman is in the depths of a contentious Tuesday primary against former New York City Comptroller Brad Lander, who is backed by Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Sen. Kathy Hochul and pro-Israel lobbying groups J Street and the American Israel Public Affairs Committee have backed Mr. Goldman.<\/p>\n<p>Both candidates are Jewish, prompting an election that has heavily focused on the Israel-Gaza war.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Lander denounced the coffee shop\u2019s post, telling The New York Times, \u201cThere are plenty of ways to lobby elected officials and express outrage at the votes they\u2019ve taken without turning coffee shops into places people don\u2019t feel welcome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Goldman\u2019s past support from AIPAC caught Poetica Coffee\u2019s attention, as it said in its now-deleted post, \u201cWe don\u2019t need your money (it\u2019s probably coming from AIPAC anyways).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While he has said he does not take corporate PAC money, which includes AIPAC, he has received hundreds of thousands from individuals through the lobbying group, according to OpenSecrets, which tracks money in politics.<\/p>\n<p>The lawmaker has been critical of the Israeli government and the war in Gaza, labeling it a \u201chumanitarian catastrophe\u201d and calling Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu\u2019s coalition an \u201cextremist government.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Following Israel\u2019s offensive in response to Hamas\u2019 Oct. 7, 2023, massacre of Israelis, over 70,000 people have been killed in Gaza.<\/p>\n<p>The coffee shop\u2019s post included this shot at Mr. Goldman: \u201cDo you see how it doesn\u2019t taste like genocide juice?
