Across the board, Americans are feeling it in the pocketbook.<\/p>\n

Start with the kitchen table. Groceries cost more. Housing costs more. Utility bills are climbing.<\/p>\n

Amid that pressure, one part of the energy system has remained stable. Natural gas remains one of the most affordable and reliable energy sources. That stability is directly tied to how it is produced and, just as important, how it is delivered.<\/p>\n

Over the past decade, the United States has become an energy powerhouse, largely driven by natural gas. Domestic production is now approaching 110 billion cubic feet per day, rivaling the output of several major global producers combined.<\/p>\n

Unlike oil and gasoline, which are priced on a global market and subject to international volatility, natural gas is largely priced regionally.<\/p>\n

That distinction has tangible consequences for consumers, insulating them from global price swings and allowing abundant domestic supply to keep prices low.<\/p>\n

This advantage is driven by the sheer scale of supply. Appalachia\u2019s Marcellus and Utica formations produce more than 30 billion cubic feet per day, placing the region among the largest natural gas producers in the world.<\/p>\n

The Permian Basin in Texas and New Mexico contributes another major stream, including large volumes of associated natural gas that come alongside record oil production.<\/p>\n

Not long ago, much of that associated gas was wasted through flaring or venting. Today, it is increasingly captured and brought to market, further expanding an already abundant supply base.<\/p>\n

To understand how that affects costs at home, it is worth looking at how a natural gas bill is structured. One piece of the pie is the commodity itself \u2014 the actual fuel \u2014 which is the most volatile component. Prices here shift based on supply, demand and weather.<\/p>\n

The second piece is distribution, the cost to deliver gas locally to homes and businesses. The third is transportation, the pipelines that move gas from production to consumption.<\/p>\n

Transportation is the smallest and most stable part of the bill. Interstate pipeline rates are regulated under the Natural Gas Act and must be deemed \u201cjust and reasonable\u201d through cost-of-service rate-making overseen by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.<\/p>\n

When prices rise sharply, the culprit is almost always the commodity side.<\/p>\n

For example, during periods of extreme cold, heating demand rises quickly, driving up prices. When pipelines are near capacity, supply cannot respond fast enough, causing prices to spike.<\/p>\n

Events such as the late-January Arctic freeze exposed this vulnerability in the Northeast, where constrained pipeline capacity contributed to sharp price spikes.<\/p>\n

This underscores a central point that is often misunderstood in energy policy debates: Infrastructure is not the source of higher costs. It is the primary safeguard against them.<\/p>\n

Where pipeline capacity is insufficient, bottlenecks emerge, limiting the ability to move abundant supply to where it is needed.<\/p>\n

In regions such as the Northeast, this has resulted in natural gas prices that exceed national averages, particularly during winter.<\/p>\n

Looking ahead, energy demand is expected to grow. The 2025 North American Midstream Infrastructure Report from the INGAA Foundation outlines the scale of investment required to keep pace with that demand and avoid further constraints. The findings are substantial.<\/p>\n

More than $1 trillion in new midstream investment will be needed through 2052, including roughly 37,000 miles of additional natural gas transmission pipelines and more than 100,000 miles of gathering systems.<\/p>\n

This level of investment is also expected to support hundreds of thousands of jobs annually throughout the build-out. It also expands the system\u2019s ability to move supply efficiently, reducing the risk of bottlenecks that drive price spikes.<\/p>\n

Expanding infrastructure enhances flexibility, reduces constraints and stabilizes prices where they are most prone to fluctuation. At the same time, the portion of the bill tied to pipelines remains regulated and predictable.<\/p>\n

The U.S. has a clear energy advantage in its abundant natural gas resources. What comes next is making sure it can be delivered efficiently and reliably.<\/p>\n

In a moment defined by rising expenses, building the systems that keep energy moving is one of the most direct ways to keep costs under control.<\/p>\n
