Iran\u2019s parliament speaker and lead negotiator in diplomatic talks with the U.S., Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, told representatives from China and Belarus Friday that Tehran was prepared to restart the war if Washington does not fulfill its commitments under the Islamabad memorandum of understanding.<\/p>\n

Mr. Ghalibaf held talks in Tehran on Friday with prominent politicians from Belarus and China, in town to attend the weeklong funeral of former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will firmly demand the full implementation of the understandings that have been reached,\u201d Mr. Ghalibaf told Igor Sergeyenko, Belarus\u2019 speaker of the House of Representatives, according to state media reports. \u201cIf the United States and the Zionist regime do not honor their commitments, the Islamic Republic of Iran will resume its proportionate measures.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added that Iran expects no U.S. interference in the Strait of Hormuz, the critical waterway connecting the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. The waterway was closed to most commercial shipping vessels for over three months this year during the U.S.-Iran war.<\/p>\n

In a separate meeting, Mr. Ghalibaf told He Wei, vice chairman of China\u2019s Standing Committee of the National People\u2019s Congress, that Iran had resolved issues preventing Chinese ships from traveling through the waterway.<\/p>\n

Mr. Ghalibaf pressed for further economic cooperation between Iran and China during the meeting, casting closer strategic ties with Beijing as an important deterrence mechanism for Tehran against the U.S. and Israel.<\/p>\n

China has consistently purchased at least 90% of Iran\u2019s oil exports, and Iran\u2019s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, visited China in May to seek Beijing\u2019s assistance in maintaining a ceasefire with the U.S. The meeting took place shortly before President Trump\u2019s summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping in the same month.<\/p>\n

Mr. Ghalibaf\u2019s comments come after a tense week of diplomacy between the U.S. and Iran.<\/p>\n

Last weekend, the two sides exchanged fire for the first time since the signing of the memorandum of understanding following an attack on a commercial ship traveling through the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n

The U.S. quickly blamed Iran for the attack and launched retaliatory strikes on Iranian territory, which Iran responded to shortly afterward.<\/p>\n

Mr. Trump announced on Monday that both sides had agreed to stand down and that Iran had requested a meeting in Doha, Qatar.<\/p>\n

Representatives from both sides held two days\u2019 worth of talks in Doha, though negotiations were indirect and held only through mediators.<\/p>\n
