Outfielder Robert Hassell III was once considered one of the top prospects in the Washington Nationals\u2019 trade that sent Juan Soto to the San Diego Padres in 2022.<\/p>\n

But after underwhelming on-field performance, Washington designated Hassell for assignment on Sunday.<\/p>\n

Another MLB franchise could claim Hassell for their roster through waivers. If he clears waivers, Hassell could remain in Washington\u2019s farm system.<\/p>\n

He was initially considered one of the jewels of the Soto trade, alongside outfielder James Wood, who was named to the National League All-Star squad on Saturday.<\/p>\n

But Hassell, who was once ranked as the No. 2 prospect behind Wood in Washington\u2019s farm system, never reached the same heights.<\/p>\n

The former first-round pick made his MLB debut in 2025 to lackluster results. He posted a .223 batting average with three home runs and 18 RBIs in 70 games.<\/p>\n

Hassell started 2026 with Triple-A Rochester, where he has struggled to live up to his status as a top prospect. He posted a .215 average with a pair of homers and 21 RBIs through 63 games in Triple-A this year.<\/p>\n
