{"id":3708,"date":"2026-07-08T13:10:11","date_gmt":"2026-07-08T13:10:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/homebuyerrelocation.com\/?p=3708"},"modified":"2026-07-08T13:10:11","modified_gmt":"2026-07-08T13:10:11","slug":"denmark-pushes-back-on-trump-remarks-says-its-ready-to-defend-greenland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/homebuyerrelocation.com\/?p=3708","title":{"rendered":"Denmark pushes back on Trump remarks, says it\u2019s ready to defend Greenland"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen vowed Wednesday to defend Greenland against any attempt by the United States to gain control of the semiautonomous Arctic island.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/homebuyerrelocation.com\/?p=3706\">Trump vents frustration at Iran after latest round of strikes, considers ceasefire over<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, Ms. Frederiksen said President Trump has made the U.S. position \u201cunfortunately clear,\u201d referring to Mr. Trump\u2019s repeated calls to acquire Greenland.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGreenland is, of course, not for sale,\u201d Ms. Frederiksen said. \u201cWe hope that all, including all allies, will respect the Greenlandic people\u2019s right for self-determination\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are ready to defend every inch of NATO, including our own territory,\u201d she said. \u201cBut one of the reasons why we have built NATO many, many years ago, is if anything happens to one of us, then everybody should stand up for each other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Denmark retains control over Greenland\u2019s foreign policy, national security and monetary policy, but Greenland operates as an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Frederiksen\u2019s comments were delivered in response to Mr. Trump reiterating his desire to make Greenland a U.S. territory. The U.S. president\u2019s comments have caused consternation at the NATO summit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGreenland doesn\u2019t help Denmark. Denmark doesn\u2019t spend money to really help Greenland, but it\u2019s an important part for the United States,\u201d Mr. Trump said Tuesday during a meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.<\/p>\n<p>Greenland, Mr. Trump said, \u201cshould be controlled by the United States, not by Denmark.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, Mr. Trump doubled down on his remarks. \u201cGreenland is a big problem for us,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/homebuyerrelocation.com\/?p=3705\">Trump threatens to cut off trade with Spain, calling them a \u2018terrible partner\u2019 to NATO<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe took Greenland and then stupidly we gave it back,\u201d he said. \u201cWe need it for protection of the world, not just the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Trump has long sought control of mineral-rich Greenland, saying he\u2019s concerned that Russia and China are already making inroads.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to its supply of critical minerals, Greenland\u2019s location would make it an indispensable site for America\u2019s ballistic missile early warning systems and space surveillance, and give the U.S. access to transpolar shipping routes.<\/p>\n<p>NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte said the nations have set up a process for managing the Arctic during a previous conference at Davos, Switzerland.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a good process in place,\u201d Mr. Rutte said.<\/p>\n<p>A senior U.S. official told reporters on a conference call this week that a U.S. takeover of Greenland is the only way to address long-term security risks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe still think that\u2019s the best way to meet the defense needs of NATO with respect to Greenland,\u201d the official said. \u201cAnd as of now, the only solution that we found as to how to solve that is with the United States acquiring Greenland.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Trump has ruled out using military force to take over the massive island between the Arctic and Atlantic oceans.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/homebuyerrelocation.com\/?p=3703\">China quietly expands economic reach in Russian-occupied Ukraine<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen vowed Wednesday to defend Greenland against any attempt by the United States to gain control of the semiautonomous Arctic island.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":3707,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[6,8],"tags":[14,2224,2231,268],"class_list":["post-3708","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","category-security","tag-donald-trump","tag-greenland","tag-mette-frederiksen","tag-nato"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.6 -
