Ryan O\u2019Connell, the Emmy-nominated actor and writer known for his role in Peacock\u2019s \u201cQueer as Folk,\u201d says Hollywood has moved sharply away from gay-themed content since the show aired \u2014 and that the change is visible across the industry.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat show came out only three or four years ago and Hollywood has changed so radically since then,\u201d Mr. O\u2019Connell told Out magazine in an interview published this month. \u201cIt is a miracle that it ever got made, for real. It\u2019s Tim Allen\u2019s world again and we\u2019re just living in it. So much of what\u2019s getting made in Hollywood does not represent the world we\u2019re living in today at all. I think that\u2019s a real shame.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr. O\u2019Connell made the remarks while promoting his forthcoming essay collection, \u201cInspiration Porn,\u201d due Tuesday from St. Martin\u2019s Press. The book, his third, follows \u201cI\u2019m Special\u201d and \u201cJust by Looking at Him\u201d and continues his reputation for candor about navigating cerebral palsy, building a satisfying sex life as a disabled gay man, and breaking into a Hollywood system that had long been resistant to stories like his.<\/p>\n

\u201cQueer as Folk,\u201d in which Mr. O\u2019Connell starred and served as co-executive producer, was canceled by Peacock after a single season. Despite the cancellation, he said he remains grateful the project reached audiences at all, given how the entertainment landscape has since shifted.<\/p>\n

The hardest section of the new book to write, he said, dealt with his Hollywood experiences.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s so vulnerable to talk about moments where you feel like you failed,\u201d Mr. O\u2019Connell told Out. \u201cThere was an earlier draft that was much more angry and bitter. When I reread it, I was guns blazing it. It was not chic. I\u2019m proud of where it ended up.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr. O\u2019Connell also criticized what he called a tendency among gay-themed books to feel \u201csanitized\u201d or aimed at women rather than at gay readers themselves. \u201cI make gay things for gay people,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019ve always been that way.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr. O\u2019Connell first gained wide recognition for \u201cSpecial,\u201d a semi-autobiographical Netflix series he created and starred in about a gay man with cerebral palsy navigating life in Los Angeles. The show earned him Emmy nominations for his work as a writer and performer.<\/p>\n
