And so they\u2019re trying to inject conversations about communism to scare people,\u201d Ms. Ocasio-Cortez, New York Democrat said, before ticking off DSA policies she supports, including Medicare for all, raising the minimum wage and stronger unions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf a Republican wants to call a stronger union \u2019communist,\u2019 they\u2019re more than welcome to do that. I\u2019m not going to be deterred,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>When asked about members of the Democratic Socialists of America who publicly self-identify as communists, she said, \u201cIt\u2019s a free country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve got people with all sorts of affiliations in this country. We don\u2019t politically persecute people,\u201d she said, adding that \u201cyou can have bona fide all sorts of extreme groups.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can hold whatever views you have in this country, and that\u2019s how America works,\u201d she concluded.<\/p>\n<p>Congressional Republicans and President Trump have amped up their attacks on the Democratic Party\u2019s most leftist faction in recent months following the victory of DSA candidates in major metropolitan cities for mayor such as New York and Seattle as well as congressional primary wins in New York and Colorado.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/homebuyerrelocation.com\/?p=4756\">Trump\u2019s tariff threat could impact Canadian economy but may be negotiation tactic, experts say<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Earlier Wednesday, Mr. Trump mocked DSA candidates and incumbents during a rally in Marietta, Georgia, saying their name does not accurately describe them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe radical left is actively trying to destroy our children\u2019s future with the disaster known as communism. It\u2019s communism. This isn\u2019t social democrat,\u201d he said, describing communism as the \u201csingle greatest threat\u201d to the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese people are stone cold crazy. And it is the enemy of the free people everywhere and everywhere in the world,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt goes back thousands of years by different names, but that\u2019s the way it happens all the time. It\u2019s squalor. It\u2019s poverty. It\u2019s death.
