Targets included missile launch sites and Iranian boats attempting to emplace mines,\u201d CENTCOM spokesman Capt. Tim Hawkins said in a statement to The Washington Times.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cU.S. Central Command continues to defend our forces while using restraint during the ongoing ceasefire,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>CENTCOM offered no further details on the strikes, which come at a crucial moment in negotiations between Washington and Tehran on a lasting end to the conflict between the two countries.<\/p>\n<p>Over the weekend, President Trump said a peace deal with Iran is \u201clargely negotiated,\u201d while Secretary of State Marco Rubio said an agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz could be imminent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Iran has effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz \u2014 a vital waterway for moving oil and other essential goods through the Persian Gulf \u2014 since the early days of the war.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. military has led an effort to help commercial ships pass through the strait.<\/p>\n<p>The statement from CENTCOM suggests that Monday\u2019s strikes targeted Iranian boats that could have placed mines along the strait or other waters near the Iranian coast.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/homebuyerrelocation.com\/?p=508\">U.S. public education needs more joy, not more money<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Those mines, or the missile launch sites cited by the Pentagon, could also have endangered U.S. troops in the region.<\/p>\n<p>Also Monday, Mr. Trump said that any agreement to end the Iran war should require several additional countries, including Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, to join the Abraham Accords, the U.S.-brokered agreements from Mr. Trump\u2019s first term aimed at normalizing relations with Israel.<\/p>\n<p>The Saudis and Pakistanis each have said, with slightly different formulations, that they will not join the accords until there is an independent Palestinian state \u2014 something that is a nonstarter at the moment in domestic Israeli politics.<\/p>\n<p>The president said in a social media post that negotiations with Iran are \u201cproceeding nicely\u201d but tied any eventual agreement to expanded participation in the 2020 accords.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s unclear whether Monday\u2019s resumption of U.S. strikes against Iranian targets will affect the ongoing negotiations.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u2022 Mary McCue Bell contributed to this article, which is based in part on wire service reports<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/homebuyerrelocation.com\/?p=506\">Why Trump\u2019s federal prison reentry program succeeded<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>U.S. forces struck missile-launch sites and other targets in southern Iran on Monday, military officials said, even as the Trump administration signaled that a peace deal between the two sides could be near.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":485,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[6,62],"tags":[17,5,39,420],"class_list":["post-511","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","category-world","tag-iran","tag-president-trump","tag-trump-administration","tag-u-s-central-command"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.6 -
