President Trump on Wednesday said Iran is running on \u201cfumes\u201d and will be forced to make a peace deal with the U.S. before its economy completely crumbles.<\/p>\n

Mr. Trump, speaking at a Cabinet meeting, said he\u2019s not satisfied with Tehran\u2019s offers to date. He said the regime will have to come around to his terms or face devastating strikes.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re negotiating on fumes. We\u2019ll see what happens,\u201d he said. \u201cMaybe we have to go back and finish it, maybe we don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr. Trump appraised the situation as negotiators work with mediators in Pakistan and Qatar to hammer out a lasting peace to the war that began on Feb. 28.<\/p>\n

The president\u2019s goal is to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon.<\/p>\n

Iranian state media said Wednesday that Tehran received an initial draft of a 14-point framework for a memorandum of understanding with the U.S. that would facilitate the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n\n

<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

The deal\u2019s details include a full lifting of the U.S. blockade of Iranian ports and a withdrawal of military forces from Iran\u2019s territory, according to Iranian broadcaster IRIB.<\/p>\n

Under the framework, commercial shipping in the strait would return to normal within a month, while thornier issues around Iran\u2019s nuclear program would be negotiated later.<\/p>\n

The White House swiftly decried the proposal as a fabrication and said no one should trust state-controlled media in Iran.<\/p>\n

Mr. Trump repeated his belief that Iran wants to make a good deal.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo far, they haven\u2019t gotten there. We aren\u2019t satisfied with it, but we will be,\u201d he said. \u201cEither that, or we\u2019ll just have to finish the job.\u201d<\/p>\n

Some prominent Republicans are urging Mr. Trump to resume his military campaign against Iran, saying the U.S. must finish what it started and gain leverage over the regime.<\/p>\n

The president has signaled he wants a diplomatic solution and won\u2019t be cajoled into rushing the deal. He said Iran\u2019s economy is in free fall, putting greater pressure on Tehran than the U.S., even though gas prices are up and Republicans are fretting about the midterm elections.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t care about the midterms; look what happened last night,\u201d Mr. Trump said, referring to primary election wins for his preferred candidates.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt looks like [the Iranians] just want to make a deal,\u201d he added. \u201cI don\u2019t think they have a choice.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cabinet officials echoed Mr. Trump during the White House meeting.<\/p>\n

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said diplomacy is the preferred route with Iran.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll see over the next few hours and days if progress can be made,\u201d Mr. Rubio said, before telling the president: \u201cYou have other options available if that doesn\u2019t work.\u201d<\/p>\n

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the U.S. blockade of Iran\u2019s ports is airtight and choking off the regime\u2019s ability to export oil and raise revenue.<\/p>\n
