{"id":670,"date":"2026-05-28T04:36:07","date_gmt":"2026-05-28T04:36:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/homebuyerrelocation.com\/?p=670"},"modified":"2026-05-28T04:36:07","modified_gmt":"2026-05-28T04:36:07","slug":"maryland-sheriffs-sue-over-new-state-law-barring-most-cooperation-with-federal-immigration-agents","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/homebuyerrelocation.com\/?p=670","title":{"rendered":"Maryland sheriffs sue over new state law barring most cooperation with federal immigration agents"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>Maryland sheriffs filed a lawsuit on Wednesday against a new state law that forbids them from cooperating with federal immigration authorities.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/homebuyerrelocation.com\/?p=668\">Planned Parenthood thumbs nose at FDA by selling abortion pills to women before they\u2019re pregnant<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Seventeen of Maryland\u2019s 23 sheriffs joined the legal challenge against the Community Trust Act, which prohibits state and local law enforcement from contacting Border Patrol and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents about illegal immigrants jailed on criminal charges.<\/p>\n<p>The law also requires federal authorities to secure a warrant before local agencies can transfer custody of an illegal immigrant.<\/p>\n<p>The filing notes that the law\u2019s requirement that federal authorities obtain a \u201cnarrow judicial warrant\u201d excludes administrative warrants issued by the Department of Homeland Security or the Department of Justice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese prohibitions apply even to individuals convicted of serious felonies, sex offenses, or other crimes for which federal law mandates detention and removal,\u201d the lawsuit reads.<\/p>\n<p>Further, state and local police in Maryland cannot ask about a person\u2019s immigration or citizenship status during stops, arrests or searches.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/homebuyerrelocation.com\/?p=666\">\u2018Standing up for taxpayers\u2019: Ron DeSantis puts Florida\u2019s property tax on the chopping block<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese prohibitions intentionally obstruct federal law enforcement and thwart Plaintiffs\u2019 obligation to uphold the Constitution of the United States,\u201d the lawsuit says. \u201cMaryland\u2019s blatant defiance of federal immigration law is not merely a political disagreement or passive abstention; it is deliberate, disruptive action that jeopardizes the public safety of all Americans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sheriff\u2019s offices in the city of Baltimore and Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Charles, Howard, Montgomery and Prince George\u2019s counties did not sign on to the agreement.<\/p>\n<p>A supermajority of the General Assembly supported the Community Trust Act, which allowed the legislation to become law without Gov.
