Former first lady Jill Biden said former President Joseph R. Biden was showing signs of \u201cgetting older\u201d before dropping his bid for a second presidential term.<\/p>\n

But Mrs. Biden, who has given several interviews to promote her new memoir, \u201cView from the East Wing,\u201d also insisted that she did not see any indications her husband was suffering from cognitive decline, or, as others have reported, that he wasn\u2019t acting like his usual self.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think that\u2019s true,\u201d Mrs. Biden said in the interview with CBS News correspondent Rita Braver released Sunday. \u201cHe was the same, the essence of the same Joe Biden. But yeah, he was slowing down. He was getting older.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mrs. Biden described her husband\u2019s status as \u201cnatural aging,\u201d in \u201ca very intense job,\u201d that \u201cages you, quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr. Biden, now 83, dropped out of the presidential race on July 21, 2024, weeks after a disastrous performance in a debate against President Trump in which he repeatedly lost his train of thought, mumbled words and uttered bizarre statements such as \u201cwe finally beat Medicare.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mrs. Biden, in an excerpt of the CBS interview released earlier, said she feared he was having a stroke.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was frightened because I had never seen Joe like that before or since. Never,\u201d Mrs. Biden said in an interview with \u201cCBS News Sunday Morning\u201d that was released on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know what happened,\u201d Mrs. Biden continued. \u201cAs I watched it, I thought, \u2018Oh my God, he\u2019s having a stroke.\u2019 And it scared me to death.\u201d<\/p>\n

At the time though, Mrs. Biden acted very differently, leading a post-debate event with her husband and praising his performance.<\/p>\n

\u201cJoe, you did such a great job. You answered every question. You knew all the facts,\u201d she said then.<\/p>\n

Mrs. Biden said in the interview released Sunday that the former president \u201cis doing well,\u201d undergoing treatment for advanced prostate cancer that has spread to his bones.<\/p>\n

She said she wasn\u2019t sure why the cancer was diagnosed so late, despite the high-level medical care Mr. Biden received in the White House.<\/p>\n

The White House medical team never administered a blood test for prostate cancer.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, you know the doctors said that, according to the American Urological Association, that men over 70 don\u2019t need a PSA, a blood test, any more because it\u2019s a slow-growing cancer. \u2026 I do feel we had amazing care in the White House, but somehow that was missed,\u201d Mrs. Biden said.<\/p>\n

Mrs. Biden said despite the questions about Mr. Biden\u2019s cognitive decline while in office she still believes \u201cthere\u2019s nothing to\u201d the questions about his mental fitness while in office.<\/p>\n

She said she fully supported Mr. Biden\u2019s decision to reverse an earlier pledge that he would not pardon his son, Hunter Biden, who was convicted of felony gun charges, three felony tax-fraud offenses and six misdemeanor tax-fraud charges. \u00a0<\/p>\n

Mr. Biden issued the pardon after Mr. Trump\u2019s win and about six weeks before he left office.<\/p>\n

Mrs. Biden said she backed the pardon because \u201cthe Justice Department changed. And I think the process was not fair to Hunter.\u201d<\/p>\n

When Mr. Trump was elected, she said, \u201cthings changed, and we knew that he would target Hunter and we could not let our son go to jail on a charge that no one would go \u2014 I mean no one has ever gong to jail for.\u201d<\/p>\n
