But after underwhelming on-field performance, Washington designated Hassell for assignment on Sunday.
Another MLB franchise could claim Hassell for their roster through waivers. If he clears waivers, Hassell could remain in Washington’s farm system.
He was initially considered one of the jewels of the Soto trade, alongside outfielder James Wood, who was named to the National League All-Star squad on Saturday.

But Hassell, who was once ranked as the No. 2 prospect behind Wood in Washington’s farm system, never reached the same heights.
The former first-round pick made his MLB debut in 2025 to lackluster results. He posted a .223 batting average with three home runs and 18 RBIs in 70 games.
Hassell started 2026 with Triple-A Rochester, where he has struggled to live up to his status as a top prospect. He posted a .215 average with a pair of homers and 21 RBIs through 63 games in Triple-A this year.
