A drone show in Australia was canceled after nearly 90 aerial devices crashed Monday night in Sydney, news outlets report.

Footage captured by viewers of the Vivid Festival drone show in Sydney’s Cockle Bay showed drones dropping out of a double helix formation and plunging into the water. A total of 89 drones fell from the sky in what one onlooker called a “catastrophic failure,” ABC Sydney reported.
Festival director Brett Sheehy said in March that organizers had “secured the latest drone technology to ensure these are the brightest drones in the world,” Mogaz International reported.

Specialists and government agencies are investigating the cause of the failure. All remaining drone shows for 2026 have been suspended.
