President Trump promised that the U.S. would help its “new friends” in Venezuela after major earthquakes rocked the South American nation, killing over 160 people and injuring nearly 1,000.

Mr. Trump said the earthquakes, which hit the northern areas of the country, were “massive in scale and have left a devastating number of deaths.”
“The U.S.A. stands ready, willing, and able to help!” Mr. Trump wrote overnight on social media. “I have instructed all agencies of our government to get ready to move quickly.”
Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the Department of State is immediately deploying search-and-rescue teams, medical resources and humanitarian assistance to Venezuela.
“The United States extends our deepest condolences to the people of Venezuela following the devastating earthquakes,” Mr. Rubio said. “Our hearts are with all those who have lost loved ones, those injured and the courageous rescue workers working tirelessly in the aftermath.”
The U.S. and the acting Venezuelan government were drawn closely together after Mr. Trump ordered a Jan. 3 raid in Caracas to arrest strongman President Nicolas Maduro and extradite him to New York to face narco-terrorism charges.

Mr. Trump is working with interim leader Delcy Rodriquez to stabilize the country and move it away from a socialist system. He also secured the country’s rich oil supply, pledging to help both the U.S. and Venezuela.
Now, Ms. Rodriguez will rely in part on Mr. Trump as she oversees recovery efforts. Devastating photographs emerged from Venezuela early Thursday showing toppled residential towers and other wreckage.
“We will be there for our new and great friends,” Mr. Trump wrote. “Early reports are not good!!!”
