New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill ridiculed President Trump for suggesting that there was widespread voter fraud in America. Then we learned that at least 6,600 noncitizens were added to her state’s voter rolls and as many as 400 cast ballots.

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin warns that up to 35,000 noncitizens may still be registered to vote in the Garden State.
There is an orgy of finger-pointing over the fiasco. The New Jersey Division of Elections blames the state’s motor vehicle commission, which automatically registers new voters when they obtain a driver’s license. The MVC blames its software provider, but the provider denies responsibility.
The Justice Department is opening an investigation and demanding that New Jersey provide information on the noncitizens who were registered to vote and those who did vote. Ms. Sherrill vows to protect these people’s privacy and accuses Mr. Trump of “weaponizing elections,” which is what Democrats have been saying since 2020.
We need the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, or SAVE America Act, to safeguard our elections. The measure would require proof of citizenship to register to vote and a photo ID to cast a ballot in federal elections.
The measure, which has passed the House but is languishing in the Senate, has incurred the wrath of machine politicians. It has been called every name in the book, including “Jim Crow 2.0,” based on the absurd idea that minorities are incapable of obtaining a photo ID, something required to board a plane, enter a federal building, cash a check or purchase an alcoholic beverage.

The Democratic Party and its allies insist that a photo ID is the work of the devil. The public disagrees. A Harvard CAPS/Harris poll found that 81% of Americans support voter ID, including 70% of Democrats and 79% of independents.
A Pew Research Center poll showed sizable majorities of Black and Hispanic voters favor ID requirements.
Georgia enacted a voter ID law in 2021. Furious Democrats launched a boycott of the state. This fizzled out after Georgia showed record voter turnout in the 2022 and 2024 elections.
It is not about incompetence in one state or fraud in another but the integrity of our election system, the foundation of democracy.
Voters need to light a fire under Senate Majority Leader John Thune, South Dakota Republican, to bring the SAVE America Act to the floor for a vote.
