D.C.’s Metropolitan Police Department implements four juvenile curfew zones, including Navy Yard

D.C. police created three juvenile curfew zones Friday, a day after putting one into place in the U Street corridor.

The Metropolitan Police Department’s creation of the zones was recently reauthorized by an executive order by Mayor Muriel Bowser after a major fight between two groups inside a Chipotle restaurant in the Navy Yard neighborhood.

All four zones will be in place from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m., with the city’s general curfew for minors, also reauthorized by the order, in effect until 6 a.m. the next day. The executive order is in effect through June 6.

The four zones are Benning Park near the community center in Southeast, Chinatown, Navy Yard and the U Street corridor. Within the zones, minors will not be allowed to congregate in groups of nine or more during the designated times.

There are several exemptions to the juvenile curfew zone rules, including accompanying parents, going to or from work, participating in a sanctioned group activity whose organizers are responsible for the minor’s transportation, engaging in interstate travel or participating in First Amendment activity.
